On a happier note!

Today, I have some great news to share with you guys. After one year of idling away my time :-), job hunting, improving on my culinary skills, job hunting, travelling, taking care of my husband, job hunting again but this time with full vigour, I finally landed myself on a job. Yes, I am now officially a practising general dentist in Dubai.

When you want something really bad, you go chasing it rather than waiting for it to come to you.  At first, I was rather relaxed about the whole job thing and not giving it due importance. But as time passed I realised I couldn’t do this forever and have to take my profession more seriously especially because my eligibility period was nearing its expiry. Moreover, the dense population of doctors and dentists in Dubai made me frantic because supply was definitely more than the demand. I was getting out of touch as well. That is when I got a call from the Director of a clinic asking me if I was interested.

“Tom gave up the brush with reluctance in his face, but alacrity in his heart.”

For a moment, I was transformed into Mark twain’s Tom Sawyer. It was already six months since I cleared the exam and I never got a good offer until then but I wasn’t going to tell him that. That is what everyone does, right? I went for the interview and after ten minutes into our conversation, it dawned on me the whole purpose of being a dentist. He was such a professional and also someone who valued his patients more than money. He genuinely wanted  to help them, to make them smile and I knew that he had it in him, the touch!  And when he explained to me his working ways and methods, I felt relieved mainly because it took all the pressure off me. The person I pictured myself to be 15 to 20 years down the lane was sitting right before me offering me a chance to work with him.

It has been one month since I  started working. Even though I wake up at 5 a.m everyday, travel for nearly two hours using two three different modes of transport to reach my clinic, work  for 8 hours and then get back home again after two hours of travel, I just love it. It feels like home and I am only happily tired. I respect and admire him and also feel blessed to be working under him. There are few doctors who really empathise and genuinely care for their patients.

I have seen the difference when people come to our clinic feeling scared, nervous and leave it smiling. Most of them, when asked to sit on the chair have just one thing to say, “I am sorry, but I hate dentists”, and that is when I believe the touch matters. We transform smiles, we transform people because after working here I realised how important a smile is to a confident person.

A new phase of my life starts here, my principles and beliefs reinstated when I found home at my workplace. All this was possible only because I got the opportunity to work under someone as great as the director of our clinic. He has without any doubt taken my professional life to new heights.

  1. I love the positive note here. I do home healthcare more for the care of the clients than the money. The people are more important than money any day. I am glad I am not the only one who thinks this way.

  2. Shruti;
    Till today I have read your countless posts and commented on it; but, believe me this post certainly touched to my heart. Each and every word in your post seems written from the bottom of heat, for yourself not for to keep reader happy; do you know when you write from your bottom of heart, that dead word found life and soul in it.
    Congratulation for finding the job;
    Congratulation for the finding the job you like and love;
    Congratulation for taking every challenge with positive attitude of mind;
    Congratulation for finding true meaning of life to spread smile on someone’s face; previously you were doing it through your wonderful posts and now you will do it through your skill.
    But, out of all these professional priorities, goals, your personal life, your husband; please don’t forget die hard reader, friend or co-blogger like me.
    At the end of the day; you are answerable to all of us.
    Do we have this right???????????????
    Wishing you all the best…….

  3. Congrats again. You should really watch Patch Adams starring Robin Willams. What you said : “what it really means to be a doctor, putting smiles on people’s faces… You reminded of the movie. Haha

    1. Really? I haven’t watched the movie yet. Maybe I will. Btw it’s not always so great, at times people tend to dbt your credibility when you all you try to do is make them comfortable! 😦 I have had that too.

  4. Hey Shruti,

    First of all, congrats you little monkey 😀 Where is my treat? Address aayachu tharate 😛 I am actually very happy for you.

    Second of all, a good thing is that you can actually respect your boss. I wish I could use the same adjectives you used 😛 You know what I mean.

    Third of all, I hope I can get away from the hefty doctor’s fee that your hospital is charging. Tell them you don’t need a poor man’s money (read me). or hope I don’t fall ill dentally.

    Finally, you look “the best” in your hospital dress. (The best in bold letters) It suits you so well. I am sure you were apt for this job. Well done dee. Congrats. Lord bless you 🙂 Again very glad for you.

    Take care! and move in Dubai if you can, rather than battling that stupid traffic.

      And about your final coomliment, I don’t know if I should be happy about that or not? 😦 I knew you I was apt for this job when during my 12 th std I diagnosed a caries on my upper last molar with the help of my little mirror and got it filled! 😀 And thank you sooooo much, I will be all smiles today!

      1. You are like a family too Shruti, if you want that elder sister post then I must send you my bank account. Show me your love in the form of dhs (just kidding). I don’t even want a ladoo, but glad you made the offer.

        I should stop making fun of you and admit that you are one of the sweetest person I have met here. 🙂

        I will not come to your hospital. They will drill a hole through my wallet 😛 I am better off with these small clinics near by my place.

        Definitely a compliment that you should be happy about, I didn’t say you look bad in the other pics. But then may be blue color suits you pretty well. 😛 That can be a reason. Glad you could identify your career path at the right time. Matters a lot.

        🙂 Cheers!

      1. Carry your bharthav along with you. If your bharthav can travel from Dxb to shj, or wherever then you guys will be saving much more time. Dubai to shj has zero traffic in the morning and the return in the evening also same thing. You guys should sit and think about it.

  6. Congratulations on your new job. So glad you found a good match! It’s like a marriage in lots of ways, if employer and employee are on ‘the same page’ so to speak going to work is a joy, but when there is a mismatch and no meeting of the minds there is misery.

    I have a job I love and a boss who treats his employees well so going to work never feels like drudgery.

    So happy for you! 🙂

        Feels so much at home. 😀

        Yes, I’ll be around now. I hope nothing is going to pull me away from you guys. You guys are great to be with, even though our correspondences are through letters and alphabets.

        Glad to know also the sleep paralysis is still pending. That means I’ve not miss your story. Time to write it out already! 😀
